HPMG Career Shadowing Program

Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, Inc. (HPMG) has developed this Career Shadowing Program to offer individuals an orientation to the medical field. Those interested in health care careers are invited to apply. Approved career shadowers receive clearance for up to 40 hours of shadowing with an HPMG staff physician or provider (MD, DO, PA-C, OD, CNM, CGC, DPM). Approved shadowers would have an opportunity to observe patient interactions or related tasks without interacting with patients or performing tasks.

Potential HPMG Career Shadowers

Are at least 16 years old and interested in learning about health care careers
Submit all required request documents on this application page at least 1 month prior to the requested start date
Understand that their request may be declined due to operational concerns
Receive a detailed approval email before entering a KP facility for shadowing
Shadow through observation and do not have "hands-on" contact with patients

HPMG Career Shadowing Program Information

Requirements before entering a KP facility (approved internally): HPMG staff provider, chief and department/clinic supervisor approval; health clearance; HIPAA and compliance training completion; waiver of liability and indemnity; CV; receipt of approval email from the program coordinator
Shadowing Days: Career shadower badge must always be worn while on KP property; visitor entry process must be followed each reporting day; no “hands-on” contact with patients; patients must grant permission to have shadower present; social distancing must be followed to the extent possible
To maintain active status, approved shadowers must: complete the hour report form within 1 week of each shadowing day; send any OR/ ASC shadowing requests to the program coordinator no later than 7 days prior to the OR/ ASC shadowing date for approval (all OR/ ASC shadowing requests will be reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis); report any pauses or early completion of shadowing opportunities to the program coordinator within 2 business days; submit extension requests to the program coordinator as soon as possible
NO shadowing when patient is positive or suspect for a respiratory infectious disease or when an aerosol generating procedure is being performed
While the HPMG Career Shadowing Program allows for shadowing within the KP clinics across the state and at Moanalua Medical Center, we were not approved to arrange shadowing of at Maui Memorial Medical Center

Health Clearance

To ensure the health and safety of our patients and their families, we require all career shadowers to submit proof of having met program specific health requirements. Your healthcare provider (not your shadowing host) will need to attest that you meet all listed health requirements to participate in the HPMG Career Shadowing Program.
